What is changing and why is it important for car rentals
New traffic regulations from March 2026 introduce changes that tighten the consequences for major speeding offenses. In practice: having your driving license suspended for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h will be possible not only in built-up areas but also on selected non-urban roads (single carriageway, two-way streets). These are exactly the types of routes often driven with a rental car: getting to the hotel, airport, between cities, or taking a “detour” due to roadworks.
At the same time, the risk increases if you drive after your license gets suspended. If someone thinks, “But I have to return the car,” they may end up facing far more serious consequences than just a short extension of a ban – including having their license revoked altogether.

New traffic regulations – How this affects driving a rental car
A rented car can be “deceptive” in the best way possible: it’s quiet, dynamic, handles bumps smoothly and doesn’t give a strong sense of speed. Add systems like cruise control or lane assist – and it’s easy to think “everything’s under control,” even when the speedometer is showing too much.
The other factor is logistical stress: flights, meetings, return deadlines, deposits, fuel. When your mind is fixed on time rather than traffic signs, sticking strictly to the 50 km/h limit becomes a real challenge, especially outside the city.
What to pay attention to: before you set off and on the road
- Set the speed limiter or cruise control “with a safe buffer” already while in the parking lot.
- Check where you can quickly see the current speed limit in the vehicle (if the car has traffic sign recognition) – but don’t treat it as gospel.
- Assume that after leaving a town, the speed limit may change immediately; look out for signs rather than “feeling” the right speed.
- Be extra alert near bus lanes: emergency vehicles can appear faster than you might expect (sometimes even on a bus lane without signals).
- If you rent an electric or hydrogen vehicle, remember that in many places these cars are still allowed to use bus lanes (but always follow the signs and local traffic rules).

Quick table: car rental and new traffic regulations from March
| Situation | What could go wrong | What to do to avoid trouble |
|---|---|---|
| Relaxed drive outside the city | Easier to exceed >50 km/h on two-way single carriageway roads | Speed buffer, regularly check speedometer, watch for signs |
| Time pressure when returning the car | Risk of “making up” lost minutes with speed | Plan an extra 15–20 minutes, drive steadily instead of fast |
| “I need to get there” despite license being suspended | Possible serious consequences (even revocation of license) | Stop driving, arrange alternative transport and contact the rental company |
| Bus lanes in a big city | Unexpected emergency vehicle alongside | Smooth maneuvers, frequent mirror checks |
Young Driver (17 years old) and probation period – what does this mean for car rentals?
It’s also worth remembering the changes for young drivers, as they could affect the very possibility of renting a car or your travel plans. According to the new regulations, a 17-year-old will have a license valid only within Poland, and for the first six months after obtaining it (or until turning 18), they will need to drive accompanied by a guardian – someone at least 25 years old, with a category B license held for at least 5 years and with no driving bans in the past 5 years; importantly, the guardian must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs and during checks may be subject to inspection just like the driver.
Until reaching adulthood, a young driver also won’t be able to legally provide passenger transport services such as taxis or transport goods (e.g., as a courier), and additionally there will be a probation period: generally 2 years for those who get their category B license for the first time, but for young drivers – 3 years or until the age of 20. From a rental perspective, this means that before booking it’s worth checking who will actually be driving, whether the guardian meets the conditions, and whether you plan any international trips (as the “17-year-old license” will only be valid within Poland).
New traffic regulations from March – Summary
The main thing is that the new traffic regulations from March 2026 introduce simple rules: mind the speed limit (especially outside the city) and do not drive if your license has been suspended. With rentals, the stakes are higher, as the problems become legal, financial, and logistical all at once.
